Weekly Update 12.17.2017

Wow- the last week before the holiday break!

According to Mrs. Schlauch, the Penny Wars secured over $200.00, and Student Council is going to match that total.  The winning grade level is the sophomore class- they will get out a bit earlier than the rest of the students on Friday afternoon.  Speaking of Friday afternoon, don’t forget about the Holiday Assembly and the Potato Passion Potluck!  Sign-ups for the potluck are in the staff lounge, and don’t forget to come and practice with April for the staff dance that will be highlighted during the Assembly.

Food Card Donations:
Just a reminder amongst the departments to try to get some money together to support our families in need.  A big thank you to the Social Studies Department- they already turned in their money!  They contributed enough money to purchase 2 gift cards (and support two families) at Vann’s- thank you!!!

Toys for Tots:
Thank you to Mr. Deola and NHS for securing 10 boxes full of toys for the Toys for Tots program.  Great job!

In the news:
Hopefully all of you saw the article in the paper last week.  As shared the previous week, thank you for all of your efforts in helping to secure such an achievement for our district!

Helena schools get national recognition for student achievement, college and career preparation
Collaboration between teachers and administrators in Helena Public Schools is working to improve student performance and preparedness.

PSAT Score Update, from Jeramie Robinson:
We got our PSAT results. A little brag for our students.

The percent of students who were at college bound benchmark was 69%, the district average was 65%, the state average was 56%, and the national average is 44%.

Also, 88% made the English Writing benchmark and 73% made the math benchmark.

Our average PSAT score was 1104 (which roughly translates to a 22-23 on the ACT) , granted the PSAT is self-selected and typically our higher achieving, academically motivated junior students take the test.

AP Honor Roll – 5 Years Now!

Our district was notified by College Board that we have again been selected to the AP Honor Roll.  This is five out of the last eight years and the third year consecutively that our district has been recognized for AP excellence.  Congratulations to all for your hard work and caring attitude.  This is the third national recognition we have received this year for academic excellence.

Our District is considered to be a medium district so the bar is 6% for improvement.   You may be interested in how many districts can make a claim to being on the honor roll for 5 years, the last three consecutively.  Of the 2,213 districts that have been on the honor roll the past 8 years, only 25 have been on it five times such as our district

This year our district is one of 447 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 8th Annual AP® District Honor Roll.  To be included on the 8th Annual Honor Roll, we had to, since 2015, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP.

In 2017, more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement, or both, and/or consideration in the admissions process. Inclusion in the 8th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years of AP data, from 2015 to 2017, looking across 38 AP Exams, including world language and culture.

Congratulations Capital High School!!
