Montana Department of Transportation Aviation Scholarships

Montana is very fortunate to have many generous individuals and organizations that believe in promoting aviation by offering monetary assistance to qualified persons. The Aeronautics Division assists in administering some of these scholarships and encourages participation. The scholarships are offered to Montanans to help defray costs of education (e.g., flight instruction, A&P mechanic school, etc.) and will be presented during the 2020 Montana Aviation Conference in Great Falls, Montana.

How to Apply

Scholarship awards are based on candidate letters explaining the reasons for applying, future career goals, past aviation experience (if any), and outstanding achievements.

Each letter must include a mailing address, email address, and a phone number. The same letter can be used for each scholarship, but candidates must submit one copy addressed to each individual scholarship. Also include a 250-word biography and one self-portrait. These will appear in the 2020 Montana Aviation Conference program for those receiving awards.

Scholarship applications must be postmarked or date stamped on or before 11:59 p.m. MST, December 1, 2019.

Mail scholarship applications to:

MDT – Aeronautics Division
PO Box 200507
Helena, MT 59620-0507

Send scholarship applications via Email.

University of Montana Presidential Leadership Scholarship

The Presidential Leadership Scholarship is the University of Montana’s premier freshman scholarship. Presidential Scholars are chosen solely on academic merit with scholarships being renewable for a total of four years. Approximately 25 PLS awards are made each year to incoming freshman.

Resident students receive a full tuition waiver. Non-resident students either have their tuition discounted through the WUE program or they receive a waiver equivalent to in-state tuition. All PLS recipients also receive a stipend of $7,500 for the Gold Level or $5,000 for the Silver Level.

PLS recipients cannot receive tuition designated scholarships in excess of tuition. Usually, non-resident students awarded the LAS or WSS are able to retain their scholarship in addition to the waiver of in-state tuition because the combination does not exceed tuition. Resident students who are awarded UM’s Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship (MAA) are not able to retain these as they are also tuition designated. MT residents cannot receive the tuition waiver associated with the PLS and the MUS Honors Scholarship so should accept the MUS Honors Scholarship because of its portability.

All DHC Application Forms completed and submitted to the Davidson Honors College by the first Friday in December will be considered for the Presidential Leadership Scholarship. Eligible candidates for the Presidential Leadership Scholarship must be recent high school graduates who have not previously enrolled as a regular college or university student.
