College Application Week Info

Next week is College Application Week (Nov 6-10) and we in the counseling department have an exciting list of events that we hope will really promote post-high school education.

  1. We will be offering college application help all week in the Career Center. We will have 30 computers, so we can accommodate a group of students at any time. So anytime between 7-3:30 you can come in and get help with your applications. Students can apply for 1 Montana college for free this week and they will need to see us for the coupon codes. (You can start them at home, but will need to finalize here)
  2. All Montana colleges are participating (private, public, 2 year and 4 year) and students who apply this week will have their fees either waived or deferred (only have to pay if you attend). Even if you are already accepted, it’s a great opportunity to apply for a backup school or another potential option.
  3. Some Senior classes will be having us come in and help whole classes with their applications.
  4. We will be offering FSA (Financial Aid) ID number help as well, students will just need to know their SSN and we can help them get set up with their ID that is required for the FAFSA
  5. Speaking of the FAFSA, CHS and HHS will be offering a FAFSA workshop where parents can come in and get their FAFSA completed. (Colleges now have a Dec 1st priority deadline). It will be held on Wednesday, November 8th from 5-7 in the Helena High Library. We will have Financial Aid officials from Carroll College, Helena College, and Reach Higher Montana available to help you fill it out.
    1. If you come with you and your child’s FSA ID, the FAFSA itself should only take about 15 minutes for a standard application.
    2. It is based on prior year tax info and with a FSA ID it will be securely and automatically linked.
    3. It is important to get it done as close to December 1st as possible to not miss out on grants and work-study opportunities
  6. We will also be offering a special Carroll College and Helena College application help.
    1. Carroll College will have a rep here to help with applications from 8:30-10:30 on Tuesday
    2. Helena College will be here from 8:30-10:30 on Thursday where their admissions counselor Ryan Loomis will come over and help kids specifically with their application
  7. We will be doing a bunch of fun promotional activities this week in hopes to promote post-high school educational opportunities
    1. We often try to remind students that some sort of training post high school is vital to compete in today’s job market. We are talking about internships, 1 year, 2 year, 4 year college programs or even military, just some sort of training beyond a diploma is important.
